I had several jobs:
Second Division Officer, First Lieutenant and First Division Officer,
ASW Officer and Fox Div Officer, Gunnery Department Head "Gun
Boss", OOD underway, and Command Duty Officer. That is about it
except that I was Landing Party Officer when we thought we were going
into Havana to rescue U.S. citizens. At that time, I was "wet pants
officer". WPO is not an official title but it fits. The best choice is Gunnery
Officer. That is the Department Head slot that took me to LT just after I left. If you are going to list highest navy rank for the folks in the roster, I was promoted to Captain, USNR in 1980. I retired at that rank in 1991 after 38 years of enlisted and
commissioned service.
I had a lot of fun and a lot of good work to do. Maybe we helped the
Cold War end as it did. At least we tried.
